Care

Maine Coon cat care

This is the Maine Coon care I do at my house. Brushing, ears, and nails. I will also tell you the first-month mistake I see, and what I keep in the house.

The week I keep

Maine Coon care is a rhythm at my house. It is not a spa project. Mine comes down to brushing, ears, and nails.

People picture a weekly bath and then meet a cat with a full coat. That is not my week. I would rather show you the real one before you decide this is your cat.

Nails, about once a month

I trim nails about once a month. That is the rhythm that works for mine. Over a year that comes out to about twelve trims. It is a small job once you have done it a few times.

I do not declaw, and I do not place a kitten with someone who plans to. That is a no for me. Who they fit, and who they are wrong for.

Ears, about every two weeks

I do ears about every two weeks. Some of my cats need ears more often. That is the part people are surprised by.

I cannot hand you one ear schedule and promise it fits your cat. Tufts hold wax. Some of mine need ears more often than every two weeks.

Brushing, a few times a week

I brush a few times a week. The mats I watch are behind the ears, on the belly, and in the britches.

I do not treat every cat the same week. A thicker coat gets more of my time. The rest need less of it.

Why I do not hand out one schedule

Brushing, ears, and nails are part of life with them. Who they fit, and who they are wrong for.

The coat is full, and it sheds. How big they get. Color, and why I do not promise a final shade early, is on Maine Coon colors.

Not a fit if you want a cat with no weekly upkeep at all. I would rather you hear it before you pick a kitten.

My experience was great. She was very knowledgeable and gave us all the information needed to give vision a great home would recommend her to anyone looking for a Maine Coon cat. Thanks again, Jennifer

The first-month mistake

The first-month mistake I see is overbathing, or skipping the brush. People either wash a coat that did not need it, or they let mats start behind the ears.

I do not put lotions, oils, or creams on them. I bathe a cat when it is actually dirty. That is not the weekly plan.

That first-year habit matters. A brush a few times a week beats a bath you do not need.

Here is what I do instead. I watch the coat, not a bath calendar. When one of mine is dirty, I can tell. Until then I brush and I leave the rest alone.

This is the one thing I push back on hardest with a new owner. It is also the easiest thing to fix. Doing less is the fix.

How I brush them

I do not keep a special shampoo routine. A brush is the tool I actually use.

I work through the trouble spots: behind the ears, the belly, the britches. Then I am done.

That is the whole method. A brush, a few times a week. There is no tub in the regular week.

I know that is a shorter answer than a grooming blog. I would rather give you the version I actually use. I do not buy lotions for these cats.

I start brushing as the coat comes in, while they are still with me. The first 12 weeks, as a timeline.

I got 2 cats from unfurgettable Maine Coon!! They were full vaccinated and healthy kittens!! She had them brushed out and their nails trimmed before pickup. She was so helpful throughout the whole time and even after I picked up by two babies. They were litter trained and chipped! I would totally recommend getting a baby from her!!

Georgia heat

I do not keep the house at a special number for them. In Douglasville the thick coat is a summer problem, not a reason to heat the house.

I do not set up one warm spot and call it done. I put them in more than one room so a cat has somewhere to go. Giving them the choice is the point.

The nursery is warmer than the rest of the house because newborns need that. It is not a number I ask every home to copy.

I am careful with an open dryer. I look before I start a load.

Clothes are optional. I do not put clothes on mine.

Food

I wrote what I feed on another page. What I feed, and what I tell people not to buy.

My cats are picky. Some will not eat canned. Those same cats love dry. I keep more than one kind so everyone eats. The details live on that page.

What you need at home

People ask me for a shopping list. Here is the honest version from my side of it.

I sell a litter box and litter. I do not sell clothes. I do not sell food bowls.

A brush is something you purchase. Toys are too. What the kitten price includes.

An electric blanket is fine with me. A heated bed is fine too. I did not want you to guess about that one.

You need a carrier before you leave here with a kitten. I ask for that every time.

I also sell a starter pack separately, and I keep it simple. What is in the starter pack.

Vet care I ask for

I recommend spay or neuter at 6 months if it is not already done.

Every kitten I place is microchipped. You register that chip in your name after they go home.

I want regular vet care for general health. I do not tell you to go get heart scans. How I think about DNA and HCM.

Their shots are not finished on the day they leave me. What the price includes, and the shots that come after.

If something feels wrong

Call me about anything. Call a vet if they vomit, have diarrhea, seem lethargic, will not eat or drink, or feel too cold.

I mean anything. You are not bothering me. After they go home you can call, text, or email me anytime.

Those signs are the ones where I want a vet first and me second. Call the vet, then call me, and I will help however I can.

If you ever cannot keep the kitten, I ask that you bring it back to me. I would rather have that call than wonder.

I also wrote HCM in plain language.

Genetic questions sit with what the health guarantee covers.

I got my Lil angel last Saturday and she is the sweetest craziest baby. The seller was incredible at keeping me in touch till we picked her up. Even after she has been amazing. Will recommend to anyone wanting one of these babies.

Questions I get about Maine Coon care

How often should I brush a Maine Coon?

A few times a week at my house. Mats show up behind the ears, on the belly, and in the britches. If you are not sure, brush. Do not add a bath the coat did not need.

Do I need a special Maine Coon shampoo?

Not for the regular week. I brush. I bathe a cat when it is actually dirty.

How often do Maine Coon ears need cleaning?

I do ears about every two weeks. Some of my cats need them more often than that.

Do Maine Coon cats need their nails trimmed?

Yes. I trim about once a month. Declaw is a no with me.

Do Maine Coon cats get cold?

They have a full coat. I do not put clothes on mine. In Georgia I watch the heat more than the cold.

Are Maine Coon cats high maintenance?

There is upkeep every week, and I will not talk you out of that. It is brushing, ears, and nails. If that sounds like too much, this is not your cat.

Can I leave a Maine Coon home all day?

That is a no with me. A kitten should not be alone more than 2 to 4 hours on most days, unless there are other animals in the house. Who they fit, and who they are wrong for.

What do I need before pickup?

A carrier. I ask for that before you leave here with a kitten. A brush and toys are yours to buy.
